Creating Cosy Spaces at Home for Winter
As winter approaches, there’s nothing better than transforming your home into a warm and inviting space. Creating cosy interiors doesn’t require a huge budget or massive changes; it’s all about small touches that make you feel comfortable and happy. Here are some of my favourite ways to bring that warmth into your home.
I’ll admit, for years I lived for the summer, long evenings, and all the sun I could soak up. But recently, I’ve come to appreciate the unique beauty of each season, especially this magical time between Halloween and Christmas. There’s something about it that feels like a soft transition into winter, a time for cosiness and warmth, and I absolutely love creating spaces at home that reflect that shift.
1. Embrace Soft Lighting
When the days are short and the nights come early, soft lighting can work wonders to create a welcoming atmosphere. Personally, I love opting for lamp shades with a gold lining, they cast a beautiful, warm hue that’s perfect for cosy winter nights. And for candles, I like to go for smoky, woody scents like Diptyque’s Feu de Bois, Byredo Woods, or Trudon Ernesto. These fragrances have a distinctive, sophisticated aroma that makes any space feel like a luxurious hideaway.
2. Add layers with Blankets and Throws
Winter is all about layers, on both your body and your furniture! Gather soft, chunky knit blankets or fleece throws and drape them over your sofa or armchairs. Personally, I love embracing greens and wool throws for a more natural, earthy vibe that feels grounding and cosy.
Consider layering rugs in your living room or bedroom as well. I tend to opt for Sisal!
3. Create a Reading or Relaxation Nook
A cosy armchair by a bookcase or in a quiet corner, paired with a soft blanket and a few plump cushions, makes the perfect reading nook. Add a little side table to hold a drink, a stack of books, or even some magazines.
4. Surround Yourself with Seasonal Scents
Scent is such a powerful part of creating an inviting space. Winter scents like cinnamon, clove, pine, and vanilla bring a warmth and familiarity that’s perfect for cosying up indoors. Try diffusing essential oils or lighting scented candles.
5. Add Layers of Comfort with Cushions and Throws
Don’t underestimate the power of throw cushions to make a space feel warmer and more inviting. Swap out lighter summer cushions for plush, textured options in rich colours like deep greens or neutrals. Layering cushions of different sizes and textures gives that cosy, ‘come sit here’ look that invites you to sink in and stay awhile.
I also love to add a few oversized floor cushions for extra seating. Not only are they practical, but they also add a layered, relaxed vibe to the room that makes it feel like the ultimate winter hideaway.
